The deadlines to submit proposals for summer 2025 and the 2025–26 academic year Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Impact Grants are fast approaching. Faculty and staff interested in submitting proposals for the seed grant funding are encouraged to do so in January and February.

Proposals for summer 2025 funding should be submitted by Jan. 17 and proposals for 2025–26 academic year funding should be submitted by Feb. 14.

Faculty and staff interested in learning more about the impact grants and how to apply for them can also register for virtual information sessions taking place Jan. 8 from 11 a.m. to noon and Jan. 28 from 10 to 11 a.m.

91��ý to support the development of seed grant proposals are available on the Impact Grant SharePoint site.

This grant program is sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Inquiries, questions and requests for additional support may be sent to the Program and Assessment Manager Alison Hanson at alison.hanson@colorado.edu.

The Excellence in Leadership Program (ELP), hosted by the CU system Employee Services office, provides an exceptional opportunity for faculty from the four CU campuses and system office to become effective leaders. ELP fellows participate in a nine-month (August–April) program designed to broaden their understanding of the University of Colorado and to equip them with the skills needed for effective leadership.

Eligibility and commitment

The 91��ý faculty nomination and selection process occurs in the spring semester. 91��ý selects eight faculty fellows annually.
Eligible nominees include tenured faculty who have shown their commitment to the university and their potential as future leaders. They may or may not currently serve in a leadership position.
The program involves a significant time commitment from August to April that begins with a two-day retreat and monthly workshops held at the four CU campuses and the CU system office (see the 2024–25 schedule as an example; dates vary annually). Additionally, fellows engage in monthly conversations with 91��ý senior leaders on the 91��ý campus from September to April.

Interested? Learn more about the program and indicate your interest to your dean so they may consider nominating you (faculty self-nominations are not accepted). Nominations are due Feb. 7, and successful nominees and their deans will be notified by April 30.

Joanne Kim, a 91��ý computer science student, was recognized by Congressman Joe Neguse with the Mollie H. Beattie Congressional Award for Distinguished Environmental Scholarship on Friday, Dec. 13, for an original short film on food waste.

Kim, and co-collaborator Kimberly Bernal, took first place at the Estes Valley Land Trust Environmental Film Festival for their film highlighting the environmental and economic impacts of food waste. This award is named for Mollie H. Beattie, an influential and inspiring conservationist, whose work as the first female U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services director focused on environmental preservation and wildlife conservation advocacy.

In addition to being recognized personally by Neguse, Kim’s achievement was celebrated by her father; 91��ý Chancellor Justin Schwartz; Dean Keith Molenaar, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Professor Ken Anderson, department chair, Computer Science; and Senator Janice Marchman, Colorado General Assembly.

In the ongoing march to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, 91��ý has been awarded two separate grants totaling $3.4 million to support the expansion of the electric Buff Bus fleet. The funding, which comes from both state and federal environmental initiatives, will help reduce the campus’s carbon footprint and improve sustainable transportation options for students, faculty and staff. The four new buses will add to the four existing electric buses for a total of eight, accounting for 40% of 91��ý’s 20-bus fleet.

“As an institution of higher learning, we have a responsibility to lead by example,” Chancellor Justin Schwartz said. “By integrating electric buses into our transportation system, we’re helping to safeguard our environment and demonstrating our commitment to our Climate Action Plan, which calls for the electrification of our entire fleet."

The first grant, valued at $1.6 million, was provided by the the Clean Fleet Enterprise Clean Fleet Vehicle and Technology Grant Program, which is a statewide competitive application process for new fleet vehicles, vehicle conversions and clean fleet technology. This grant will go toward the purchase of two more 40-foot buses, which are expected to be in service by summer 2025.

The second grant, amounting to $1.8 million, was awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency, which supports the transition to electric vehicles nationwide as part of their mission to protect human health and the environment. This grant will help purchase two 60-foot buses, which are expected to be operational by early 2026.

Both grants will go toward the purchase of the buses, as well as the infrastructure needed to support them, such as charging stations, technician training and maintenance equipment. Once the new buses are put into service, 91��ý will retire four diesel buses from its fleet.

The university has set ambitious goals for the next decade, including a reduction in campuswide greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. The electric bus initiative is an important component of these plans, which also include investments in additional transportation strategies, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, sustainable building practices and waste reduction programs.

“We are thrilled to receive this funding, which will allow us to continue to advance our efforts in building a more sustainable and resilient campus,” Vice Chancellor for Infrastructure and Resilience Chris Ewing said. “This investment in electric buses is a key milestone for our long-term environmental strategy. It aligns with our commitment to reducing emissions and supporting green technologies that not only benefit our campus but also contribute toward the goals of our climate action plan.”

91��ý’s Transportation Services team will hold another bus naming contest ahead of their debut to bring attention to the electric buses and encourage students, faculty and staff to embrace cleaner transportation options.
