As we complete our first full week of the “new normal” of online learning and remote work here at the University of Colorado Boulder, I write to you with an offer of support and a message of gratitude. First and foremost, I want to say that the Program in Jewish Studies stands ready to support you in any way that we can, and that I am always available to speak by phone or video. To our students, in particular, I want to say that we know how difficult this period is, and we are here for you. Please let us know if you encounter any issues, ranging from lack of access to WiFi or computing technology to food insecurity to uncertainty about university procedures. We are in close and constant communication with campus leadership, and we will do our best to connect you with the right offices and individuals at CU and get you the resources you need; we are also working closely with our undergraduate advisory board to make sure that we are responsive to any emerging challenges that arise. (For those of you who don’t know it, I also encourage you to visit the university’s COVID-19 site.) We often throw around the term “intellectual community” in academic settings, but that is what we are: a genuine community.

I write, second, to express my profound thanks to our students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Amid the challenges of ever-changing information, new technologies, and social isolation, our courses, internships, and other operations continue, albeit in online form; our events, including a concert with the Conference on World Affairs and lecture with Anschutz’s Center for Bioethics and Humanities, have been put off, but we are looking into the possibility of rescheduling in the future; all in-person spring commencement programs at the university have been cancelled, but we are exploring alternate ways to honor the many accomplishments of our students. All of this is a testimony to the dedication of the diverse members of our community, who have selflessly devoted their time and energy to ensuring that we can continue to fulfill our mission of educating tomorrow’s global citizens and community leaders.

None of us expected the semester to look like this, but I am confident that we, as a Jewish Studies community, will continue to be there for one another. I am so very grateful to each and every one of you, and my (virtual) door is always open.

91��ý student Lior Gross (left) and the Program in Jewish Studies' Instructor Eyal Rivlin (right) launched their new gender-inclusive Hebrew language in October 2018. The project began last year when Gross, who identifies as gender nonbinary, was faced the difficult task of describing themselves or what they are doing. Until the Nonbinary Hebrew Project was launched, the Hebrew language did not have many options for those who identify as nonbinary.

As we enter the 2018-2019 academic year, we are pleased to announce a variety of new developments in the Program in Jewish Studies at 91��ý.

We welcome two new faculty members to Jewish Studies, Rebecca Wartell, Instructor in Jewish Studies, and Hilary Kalisman, Assistant Professor of History and Jewish Studies and the Endowed Professor of Israel/Palestine Studies in Jewish Studies.
Applications are now open for our brand new Graduate Certificate in Jewish Studies.
This year's Community Talks Series, Yiddishkvell: An Appreciation of All Things Yiddish, will feature a free Yiddish concert and talks with renowned Yiddish scholars.

The Program in Jewish Studies and the University Libraries' Special Collections, Archives, and Preservation at the University of Colorado Boulder are pleased to share the progress we have made this academic year processing the Post-Holocaust American Judaism (PHAJ) Collections!

In addition to digitizing many of collection materials and creating finding aids for all collections, we hosted multiple CU students in the collections as they conducted research and learned archival practices. We also welcomed Amy Milligan as our 2017 Jim and Diane Shneer Fellow in Post-Holocaust American Judaism and presented our third biannual Embodied Judaism Symposium: SHE in November 2017.

What's Happening in the PHAJ Collections

Harry W. Mazal Holocaust Collection

The processing of the Harry W. Mazal Collection is nearing completion! The finding aid follows the most current standards for archival description and is now available online. The digital items in the collection, such as computer discs and hard drives, are currently being copied into the University Libraries' digital preservation system. These will soon be included in the same finding aid, which is linked on the Mazal Holocaust Collection page. The monographs and serials are almost completely cataloged and the items with preservation concerns are undergoing treatment.

Zalman M. Schacter-Shalomi Papers

Thanks in part to an Innovative Seed Grant from 91��ý's Office of Research and Innovation and a gift from the Bender Family Foundation, we have digitized and preserved many of the fragile video and audio materials in the Zalman M. Schacter-Shalomi Papers. Thank you to the University Libraries' Media Auxiliary Service team for their notable work on this project.

A generous gift from the Yesod Foundation this year is supporting student work conducting vital copyright research for the audiocassettes in the Shachter-Shalomi papers.

We have also launched a digital exhibit exploring the life and work of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and his role in shaping contemporary Judaism.

2017- 2018 PHAJ Student Workers & Researchers

The Program in Jewish Studies and the University Libraries' Special Collections, Archives, & Preservation offer a number of student work and research opportunities in the PHAJ Collections. A big thank you to this year's student workers, Jacob Flaws, Jordan Klevdal, Ellen Gostling, and Adrian Auchterlorie!

Jacob Flaws

Jacob was a graduate student employee in the PHAJ collections throughout the academic year. His graduate research utilizes source materials from three witness groups – German perpetrators, Jewish survivors, and Polish witnesses – to triangulate and re-conceptualize the spatial reality of Treblinka.

Jordan Klevdal

Jordan served as a graduate student employee in the PHAJ collections for the duration of the academic year. Her graduate research interests include textual materiality, manifestations of nostalgia in the 20th century, and the gendering of memory.

Ellen Gostling

Ellen Gostling was the inaugural recipient of a Post-Holocaust American Judaism Collections Undergraduate Scholarship. This spring, Ellen created a digital resource and research guide related to conversion practices during and after the Holocaust framed by Harry W. Mazal’s own experience.

Adrian Auchterlorie

Adrian is currently conducting copyright research for the digitized audiocassetes in the Zalman M. Schachter-Shalomi Papers, determining potential copyright holders on digitized materials held in the collections. Adrian's work has been supported by a grant from the Yesod Foundation.

Summer 2018 Graduate Fellows

The Program in Jewish Studies, in partnership with the Center for Humanities and the Arts (CHA) and the Department of History, annually provide three graduate student summer research fellowships.

This Summer 2018, Kelly Walsh and Emily Frazier-Rath are recipients of the CHA-Jewish Studies Post-Holocaust American Judaism Summer Fellowship, and Jacob Flaws is the recipient of the History-Jewish Studies Archives Summer Fellowship. In addition to conducting their own original research in the PHAJ collections, these fellows will work alongside librarians and archivists on projects such as researching, designing, and curating digital exhibits. They will present their final PHAJ projects at a Fall graduate symposium.

Kelley Ann Walsh

Kelly, an MFA candidate in Dance, focuses her research on the contributions of Jewish-Appalachians to Appalachian dance and culture and the reasons why Jewish-Appalachian population is declining.

Emily Frazier-Rath

Emily, a PhD candidate in German Studies, is doing research on the intersections between Jewish and Roma activism in post-war Germany that center on remembering the Holocaust/Porajmos.

Jacob Flaws

Jacob, a PhD candidate in History, will be spending time with the Harry W. Mazal Holocaust Collections and will produce a showcase about how the collection contains materials on many diverse topics.

Our 2018 summer fellows' digital exhibits will be available for viewing on the PHAJ Collections website this coming Fall 2018.

Jacob Flaws

Jacob Flaws is a third-year PhD student in the History Department studying under Professor David Shneer. His research focuses on the death camp at Treblinka in Poland and the spatiality of the camp during its existence. Jacob is utilizing source materials from three witness groups – German perpetrators, Jewish survivors, and Polish witnesses – to triangulate and re-conceptualize the spatial reality of Treblinka.

Jacob been a graduate student employee in the PHAJ Collections throughout the 2017-2018 academic year. His favorite part of working in the archives is the daily opportunity to expand his knowledge on two levels – first, learning about how archives work and the processes by which collections are organized, categorized, and digitized; and second, learning from the collections' subject material itself, which often is beyond his own field and consistently opens up new research avenues and ideas.

Ellen Gostling

Ellen Gostling is currently an undergraduate pursuing a degree in International Affairs with a focus on Africa and the Middle East. She hopes to pursue a graduate degree in Comparative Religion and is passionate about ideological conflict, which drives her research in the PHAJ archives. Ellen says, "What I love about the archives is that beyond all of the fascinating materials we get to use, all of the people working in the archives are intelligent and passionate about what they are doing, and they have inspired me to think about things differently." Outside of academics, she is an officer for CU Powerlifting.

Ellen was the inaugural recipient of the Post-Holocaust American Judaism Collections Undergraduate Scholarship this Spring 2018. She is currently conducting research in the collections and working on creating a digital resource and research guide related to conversion practices during and after the Holocaust framed by Harry W. Mazal’s own experience.

Jordan Klevdal

Jordan Klevdal is a second-year master's student in the English Department with a concentration in critical theory and gender studies. Her current research interests include textual materiality, manifestations of nostalgia in the 20th century, and the gendering of memory.

Jordan been a graduate student employee in the PHAJ Collections throughout the 2017-2018 academic year. Her favorite thing about working in the archives is that whenever you start looking through a collection, you stumble across tiny, unexpected details. These could be anything from a scribbled note to an editor, to a funny post-it note, to an uncatalogued snapshot. "These personal traces really can't be cataloged and so they always surface as a surprise and bring with them a certain joy of discovery," Jordan says, "They are part of what makes the archives so vibrant and, in a way, alive."

Adrian Auchterlorie

Adrian Auchterlorie is an undergraduate student currently working towards a BA in Political Science and a minor in English Literature.

Adrian currently holds an undergraduate student position in the PHAJ Collections conducting copyright research for the digitized audiocassetes in the Zalman M. Schachter-Shalomi Papers. She determines potential copyright holders on digitized materials held in the collections, finds contact information for potential holders, and reaches out for confirmation and appropriate credit information. Adrian enjoys working in archives because there are so many treasures to be found and she always learns new things.

The Program in Jewish Studies is excited to announce two new undergraduate opportunities for the Spring 2018 semester. The Post-Holocaust American Judaism Collections Undergraduate Scholarship in the amount of $1000 is presented in conjunction with the University Libraries Special Collections and Archives and gives undergraduates hands-on experience in our PHAJ Collections. The Jewish Studies Freshman & Sophomore Scholarship awards $500 to the student with the highest GPA in the pool of applicants.

Jewish Studies offers a number of scholarships and fellowships open to Undergraduate and Graduate students. All students are eligible, Jewish and non-Jewish. Visit our Funding page to learn about all of our opportunities.

The Post-Holocaust American Judaism Collections Undergraduate Scholarship

A $1,000 undergraduate scholarship will be awarded for a student to conduct research in the PHAJ Collections. The successful applicant will have the chance to explore one of the following research topics, all of which can be found in the collections:

Political activism (mid-late 20th century)
Feminism
Links between Judaism & other religious traditions
Poetry & creative expression (dance, art, music, poetry)
Other – if there is an alternative topic you would prefer to explore, please let us know.

Applications should be sent to CUJewishStudies@colorado.edu by December 15 at 5 PM. No late submissions will be accepted.

Research in Jewish Studies: How, What, Why?

In addition to these brand new scholarships, the Program in Jewish Studies is also accepting applications for its second annual Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, Research in Jewish Studies: How, What, Why? This program will acquaint undergraduate students with the skills to conduct high level, independent, and interdisciplinary research. Participation in the program will provide a valuable opportunity for our undergraduate students to enhance their learning experience at the university, improve their ability to create and execute original research, and impress both future employers and potential graduate school admissions committees.

What the Program Entails:

Complete a research project in the Humanities, Fine Arts and/or Social Sciences, which must involve Jewish Studies.
Attend a presentation by Jewish Studies faculty members who will speak about their own research and explain how they go about it.
Participate in a field trip to the Post-Holocaust American Judaism archive in Norlin Library, led by Professor Nan Goodman.
Present their research project at the Jewish Studies End-Of-Year Showcase.

All undergraduate students are eligible to participate in the program. Students interested in participating please submit a short letter of interest to Professor Nan Goodman at Nan.Goodman@colorado.edu.

Build real, hands-on work experience through the Internship in Jewish Studies! Come to us with your interests and we will place you with a local non-profit, educational institution, political office, medical school, or other site for a semester of service learning. Interns work 7-10 hours per week at their internship site and then come together for a weekly class with Eyal Rivlin to learn about leadership, work place ethics, and how Jewish Studies an inform their professional lives.

The Program in Jewish Studies is pleased to announce an exciting change to the structure of the Major in Jewish Studies!

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Jewish Studies may now choose from one of the following two major concentrations:

Culture Intensive Concentration, in which students will pursue an in-depth study of Jewish culture.
Foreign Language Intensive Concentration, in which students will obtain advanced language skills in addition to considerable knowledge of Jewish culture.

These major concentrations will enable students to pursue the best Jewish Studies degree for them!

The Major in Jewish Studies is designed to help students develop the professional skills they need to become engaged global citizens and to obtain a job after graduation or pursue graduate studies. By studying the world through the lens of Jewish culture, history, literature, society, and thought from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, our students gain fundamental critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills.

All students of all backgrounds, Jewish and non-Jewish, may pursue a Major or Minor in Jewish Studies.

On March 2, the Program in Jewish Studies hosted its second annual Hebrew Shmooze-A-Palooza, a musical celebration of the Hebrew and Yiddish classes at CU-Boulder. Lead by Eyal Rivlin, Hebrew Instructor at CU, students prepared musical arrangements in Biblical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew, and Yiddish and performed them for their fellow classmates, prospective Hebrew students, and CU faculty. Rivlin, an accomplished musician, and a handful of local Boulder musicians accompanied the student performers.

This event exemplifies Prof. Rivlin's creative pedagogical approach: encouraging students to learn language through music, which helps students retain their language learning skills and makes learning Hebrew fun! Check out the fun below in a few of our photos from the event!
