Our next FRIT Fridays event will be on Friday, March 21st from 3:30PM - 4:30PM in HUMN 370. Anne Violin-Wigent, Associate Professor of French at Michigan State, will be presenting on rethinking modern language programs for today's research university. Join us if you can and pass this along to any other AHUM graduate students or faculty that may be interested. Light refreshments will be served.

Apply by February 1^st to study abroad in Italy next summer! Dante in Florence is a Global Seminar course taught in Florence, Italy, by Professor Suzanne Magnanini in May. On this program, students will:

Explore Dante's most fantastic images in the Inferno, formed through references to the medieval art and architecture in Italy
Participate on day excursions to Pisa, Monteriggioni, Siena, Montaperti, and San Gimignano
Study both the sites to which Dante refers to in Inferno and the works of other artists inspired by his poem

This course is open to all majors, and counts for the following CU requirements:

Upper division Literature and the Arts Core requirement
A&S Gen Ed: Arts & Humanities Upper-division
4000-level elective credit for Italian majors
Upper-division elective credit for Italian minors
3000-level Art History credit
Engineering Humanities/Social Science credit
CMCI Core: Humanities & Arts
International Affairs Off-Campus Experience
Upper-division Humanities credit

In this course you will improve your ability to understand, summarize and analyze a variety of Italian texts with a sustainability theme. The course looks at Italian initiatives such as the Italian Slow Food movement and the Green Heroes. We also read Italian short stories about the natural world, excerpts from modern and contemporary environmentally conscious literature, and blogs from individuals committed to sustainability. You will create a personal sustainable action plan in Italian.

Join us for a mini-intensive workshop on the language of the Mafia. Discover the difference between "Pizzo" (Lace) and "Pizzo" (Beak) and delve into the origins of this mysterious word: MAFIA.
Come ready to explore the criminal language world and practice its unusual words together. It is definitely not Pizza!

Printing and Rare Books

Join us for a pop-up exhibit on the history of printing in Italy! Learn about how Italy became a center for printing in Renaissance Europe and produced a number of innovations in printing. You’ll be able to examine up close a variety of works printed in Italy including Renaissance copies of Dante’s Inferno; early modern guide books for touring Rome and Naples; early modern scientific texts; and medieval manuscripts. For those with a more modern taste, there will be photographs and books related to World War II. Bi-lingual English labels prepared by advanced students of Italian will make it easy to read and learn more about these fascinating texts. All are welcome!
