BOLD Tutoring Center - Tutor Position

BOLD Tutoring provides academic support for all students of the College of Engineering and Applied Science. These services are supported by the BOLD Center located in the Engineering Center (ECCE 100). Student staff, who provide direct assistance and creative programming, are supervised and trained by full-time, professional BOLD staff.

Job responsibilities

  • Tutoring and Programming -Assist students with problem sets, papers, and other subject-related coursework. Discuss difficult concepts and provide new approaches to understanding them.
  • Training and Support- Participate in mandatory training, bi-weekly tutor meetings, peer observations, and meetings with Lead Tutor and Supervisor.
  • Administrative Responsibilities - Responding to emails, maintaining tutoring spaces, follow through on requests, assist with recruitment, maintain confidentiality and objectivity in tutoring work, and seek feedback on performance.
  • Tutoring Preparation - Increase subject knowledge area, prepare materials, participate in tutoring activities, and offer pre-exam reviews.

Pay

This is a Student Hourly I position with a set pay rate of $16.00 an hour, and no additional benefits other than pro-rated sick leave.

Terms of Employment

  • Expected to work 7-10 hours per week during the duration of employment.
  • The Tutor is expected to follow BOLD Tutoring expectations, policies, and procedures during all work shifts.
  • The Tutor is expected to work during some evenings, weekends based on scheduling needs. A somewhat flexible schedule is required to accommodate workshops.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory job performance evaluation by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • University full-time undergraduate or graduate student
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, with special attention paid to grades B+ or higher in applicable tutoring subjects
  • Must have sophomore, junior, senior or graduate-level status
  • Have successfully completed at least one semester of graduate or undergraduate coursework at the CU-Boulder College of Engineering & Applied Science
  • Demonstrated excellence in lower division courses relevant to tutoring discipline
  • Strong subject-based knowledge of either:
    • Math or other math-based classes (e.g. physics, statistics, engineering, computer science)
    • Life sciences (e.g. biology and Chemistry)
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities

Position: Undergraduate Engineering Academic Services Program Intern

Department: BOLD Center

Job responsibilities

Duties during your appointment as the Program Intern include:

  • Assist in the scheduling and coordination of academic programming for BOLD students.
  • Support and enhance the attendance of the BOLD students at engineering skill study tables, workshops, and academic partnership events.
  • Document academic operational processes and procedures for tutor hiring, program file management, and system organization processes.
  • Lead tutor scheduling process.
  • Advertise academic support offerings to BOLD Scholars and active student society members.
  • Coordinate tutor application management, develop interviewing schedule, assist with tutor training, and support tutors on the job through frequent check-ins and timely reminders.
  • Site visits at multiple satellite tutoring locations during the academic year such as The BOLD Center, SMEAS Aerospace Engineering Building on East Campus, and Williams Village North.
  • Provides in-person program and operational support to the Academic Services Program Manager and Learning Lab in the BOLD Center.
  • Support the BOLD Academic Services automated scheduling system Calendly for tutoring appointments in the BOLD Center and College of Engineering of Applied Sciences.
  • Collaboration with the Academic Services Program Manager to enhance Engineering Tutoring & Undergraduate Research initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay

This is a Student Hourly II position with a set undergraduate range of $16.50-19.75 based on qualifications and relevant job experience. No additional benefits other than pro-rated sick leave.

Seeking applicants with excellent customer service and communication skills to staff the BOLD Center front desk.Must have some availability between 10am-2pm a few days of the week, Monday through Friday.

The position is in person at the BOLD Center Front Desk.

Job Responsibilities

The purpose of the BOLD Community and Scholarship Assistant (CASA) role is to support the BOLD Community’s mission in fostering a sense of belonging for underserved and marginalized students in the College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS).   • Work with BOLD team members and occasionally the college social media manager to draft and share content on BOLD’s social media accounts.
  • Publicize BOLD events and student society events through social media accounts.
  • Develop relationships with campus social partners to further reach BOLD's content and our campus partners’ content. Share content from campus partners on BOLD’s platforms and make it easy for campus partners to share our content.
  • Review social metrics (how our stories and content perform) and suggest opportunities for engagement and growth.
  • Research and report on trends in social media to keep BOLD in line with best practices and new content strategies.

Other Information

The GoldShirt Lead Mentor position is an essential part of providing holistic and inclusive support to students participating in Broadening Opportunities through Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) scholarship programs. The purpose of the GoldShirt Lead mentor is to provide leadership, support, guidance, and occasional oversight to some of the functions of the GoldShirt Mentors. GoldShirt lead mentors are hired and supervised by the GoldShirt Program Manager.

Summer Areas of Responsibility (100-120 hours total)

  • Assist in leading and facilitating the following (~10-30 hours between July 14 and August 13, likely spread out over a series of Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays and ~10 –30 hours between August 14 and August 23)
    • Mentor training
    • Mentor staff meetings
    • Supporting the planning of BOLD Programs Orientation planning activities
    • Guiding the planning of GoldShirt Academic Year “Mini” Retreats
    • one-to-one meetings with GoldShirt Staff
  • Assist in the implementation of seminars, events, and activities aimed to support students living in the BOLD Will Vill Residential Community during the Pre-Arrival Program (~5-20 hours between Sunday, August 20 and Wednesday, August 23)

The GoldShirt Mentor position is an essential part of providing holistic and inclusive support to students participating in Broadening Opportunities through Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) scholarship programs. The purpose of the GoldShirt mentor role is to aid the BOLD staff in fostering a sense of connection, belonging, community, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) identity among GoldShirt scholars and supporting their academic success. GoldShirt mentors are hired and supervised by the GoldShirt Program Manager.

Summer Areas of Responsibility

The supervisor will work with each mentor to decide whether they will have the following responsibilities in accordance with the needs of the GoldShirt community and the mentor’s availability and interest.

July 14 – August 13 (10-20 hours total)

  • Participate in Mentor staff meetings and team building
  • Complete initial mentor training
  • Assist in the planning of GoldShirt Academic Year “Mini” Retreats

Monday, August 14 – Saturday, August 19 (10 –20 hours total)

Academic Year Areas of Responsibility

Mentorship (2-7 hours per week)

The responsibilities related to mentorship are flexible to support the interests, goals, skills, and needs of mentees and mentors. GoldShirt peer mentors are encouraged to propose additional ways in which they could support the purpose of the peer mentor role. The supervisor will work with each mentor to define their mentorship responsibilities. Three examples of mentorship responsibilities are listed below:

Track 1: Offering 1:1 or small group mentorship to 1st/2nd year scholars

  • Meet with assigned mentees on a regular basis, as determined by GoldShirt staff
  • Cultivate interpersonal relationships built on mutual respect and trust with mentees

Track 2: Fostering collaborative mentorship among a small peer group of 2nd – nth year scholars

  • Meet with designated scholar group on a regular basis, as determined by GoldShirt staff
  • Cultivate interpersonal relationships built on mutual respect and trust among scholars in designated group
    • Be open to feedback and growing with scholars
    • Encourage scholars to offer feedback and ask for what they need
    • Work with scholars to support each other in defining and achieving goals
    • Approach conversation with curiosity, compassion, and a desire to learn
  • Provide designated scholar group with a series of successive, meet-ups designed to engage scholars in experiential and collaborative activities to engage the interests and goals of scholars (E.g., leading a goal-setting and accountability group, DM’ing a Dungeons and Dragons group, or leading a campaign style game such as Gloomhaven)

Track 3: Coordinating mentorship opportunities, e.g.,

  • Working with GoldShirt program staff to coordinate mentorship and networking opportunities with industry partners, alumni, and scholars

Mentor team support (1 hour per week)

  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled mentor staff meetings
  • Discuss mentee experiences, needs, interests, and trends with mentor and BOLD staff
  • Partner with other mentors and BOLD staff to offer holistic, proactive, and individually responsive support to mentees

Programming (1-8 hours per week, 8 hours for special events such as “Mini” retreats)

  • Partner with college & campus partners, campus services, BOLD staff and other student employees to plan, market, implement, and evaluate programs and events held in the BOLD center, the Williams Village residential community, on campus, and off campus
    • Academic Support and Resource Events
      • Designed to connect students to existing academic resources within the college (estimate: 3 programs/semester).
    • Community Building Events
      • Socials: designed to engage the broader GoldShirt community (first-year cohort and beyond) in ~1-2 hour long activities that foster a sense of connection, community, and pride in GoldShirt (estimate: 3 programs/semester).
      • “Mini” retreats: designed to engage the broader GoldShirt community (first-year cohort and beyond) in ½ day or full day activities that foster a sense of connection, community, and pride in GoldShirt (estimate: 2-3 programs/semester).
        • E.g., a hike & picnic; a ropes course day; a mini golf/go-cart/arcade excursion; a Rockies game; GoldShirt Olympics
    • Resource Engagement Events
      • Designed to help students engage with important resources and develop skills related to professional development; cultural diversity and inclusion; health and wellness; financial literacy; and life skills.

GoldShirt Student Assistant Position – Job Description

The purpose of the GoldShirt Student Assistant (GSSA) position is to provide support to the Engineering GoldShirt Program, including supporting GoldShirt students, events and projects. GoldShirt Student Assistants are an essential part of providing holistic and inclusive support to students participating in Broadening Opportunities through Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) scholarship programs. We expect GoldShirt Student Assistants to contribute their creativity and perspective to better the BOLD Center through their feedback and work. GoldShirt Student Assistants assist with event and program execution during the academic year, with the opportunity to work in the summer if both supervisor and employee agree. GSSAs will be hired and supervised by the Coordinator for Community and Student Support. GoldShirt Student Assistants will support the GoldShirt Program Manager and the Coordinator of Community and Student Support with daily work as part of the student and staff team.

Areas of Responsibility for the GSSA role

The supervisor will work with each GSSA to decide which of the following responsibilities will be assigned to each GSSA in accordance with the needs of the GoldShirt community and the GSSA’s availability and interest.

  • Being an ambassador of BOLD
  • Creating a welcoming environment and supporting the students BOLD serves.
  • Attending and supporting BOLD/GoldShirt programs
  • Working on GoldShirt tasks out in the main BOLD area so students see people they know and feel comfortable sitting with
  • Communicate with team members as well as other student employees
  • Be open to learning and sharing personal perspective and experience.
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled mentor staff meetings
  • Administrative support and providing support for event planning and coordination
  • Making phone calls to prospective new GoldShirt students.
