DAO Post-Production Captioning
What We Do
The Digital Accessibility Office (DAO) captioning team assists faculty, staff, and students in captioning audiovisual media in accordance with 91´«Ã½â€™s digital accessibility policy and standards by:
- Fulfilling captioning accommodation requests on behalf of faculty, staff, and students with disabilities
- Facilitating the captioning of audiovisual materials through a captioning vendor on behalf of campus media creators
- Providing resources and training to help individuals understand and fulfill their captioning responsibilities under campus policyÂ
- Consulting with individuals about their particular captioning processes and workflows
Why Captioning Matters
At 91´«Ã½, captioning is a collaborative effort and directly supports 91´«Ã½â€™s strategic priorities by providing access for students, staff, and faculty.
In the learning environment, access to captions impacts a wide variety of students, including (but not limited to) individuals who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing, those who learn most efficiently by reading, English language learners, and people with short-term medical conditions or injuries.
For some students with disabilities, captioning can be critical to ensure equal access to course materials such as videos and audio recordings. In some video players, including YouTube, captions even can allow students to search through the text of a video for more efficient reviewing. If captioning is not provided, it creates a barrier in the learning environment that can directly impact a student’s educational success.
Beyond the classroom, all public-facing audiovisual media that represents a 91´«Ã½ campus department or service must have captioning available. Anyone who is creating content should understand their captioning responsibilities by reviewing section G-2 of the 91´«Ã½ Campus Standards for the Digital Accessibility Policy. We also encourage you to review any other sections that may be applicable to the content you are creating.Â

Work with the DAO Captioning Team
You can work with the DAO captioning team to caption your content. The captioning team can submit captioning requests to a vendor on your behalf; the cost starts at $1.35 per minute and can increase depending on the turnaround time needed and other factors. There will be no cost to you or your department if captioning is needed to fulfill a student’s captioning accommodation through the Disability Services Office. Submit the Captioning Request form to get started.
Create Captions Yourself
If you decide to create captions on your own, we have resources that can help! Check out our DIY CaptioningÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýCaptioning Quality Guidelines pages to get started. Faculty, staff, and students can request captioning training or consultations at no cost by emailing Captioning@Colorado.EDU.
