November 8-9, 2025 in Downtown Denver, Colorado

ACMS, in collaboration with Metropolitan State University of Denver and Ulaanbaatar-Denver Sister Cities Committee, are pleased to announce the following Call for Abstracts for the upcoming joint conference entitled Under Shared Blue Skies: Mongolia and the North American West, which is generously sponsored by the University of Colorado and Colorado State University. This conference is scheduled to take place in downtown Denver, Colorado - home to one of North America's oldest and most dynamic Mongolian communities - from November 8-9, 2025.

Since the early 1990s, the connections between Mongolia and the North American West have grown into vibrant, long-term bridges of knowledge and culture. A wide variety of research and creative scholarship connects Mongolia to the North American West, ranging from archaeology to zoology.

At the same time, much of this scholarship is produced by members of Mongolian communities in the North American West. This conference seeks to bring together scholars, practitioners, students, and community members in the North American West who have engaged in or are simply interested in scholarship related to Mongolia. This will be a two-day interdisciplinary event to share knowledge and experiences while also providing opportunities for interaction and development of new ideas for collaboration.

We welcome submissions for short paper (10 minutes) and poster presentations, and encourage submissions from researchers, practitioners, and/or students who engage with research and/or creative scholarship related to Mongolia. Scholars from any discipline or field are welcome to submit an abstract. This conference is not strictly limited to the academic community, and we encourage participation by artists, educators, and members of the non-profit sector.

Join us for an engaging discussion with CU Denver MBA/IB Alumni Paul Taylor on “U.S. Commercial Diplomacy and the Emerging Commercial Landscape of Southeast Asia.” In this presentation, Paul Taylor will discuss how U.S. embassies and consulates, through the Foreign Commercial Service and interagency cooperation, are deepening partnerships with local governments and private sectors to advance mutual prosperity. With Southeast Asia becoming increasingly central to global economic trends, this session will highlight why U.S. commercial diplomacy remains vital in keeping American companies competitive

Paul Taylor

Paul currently serves as the Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Manila, Philippines. Between 2013 and 2022, he served in similar roles at the U.S. Embassies in Ghana and Indonesia. He brings to these positions more than twenty-five years of international business experience and strong knowledge of how the U.S. government can facilitate market access and development for U.S. companies in emerging markets.

Prior to his assignment to West Africa, Paul was the Director of the U.S. Commercial Center in Shanghai and the Deputy Principal Commercial Officer of the Consulate's Commercial Section. Previously, he served as a Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China, leading the U.S. Mission’s efforts to create greater market opportunities for U.S. firms in the Information and Communications Technologies industry. In this role, he was involved in high-profile market access issues for U.S. internet companies, helped pave the way for one of the largest U.S. acquisitions in China’s IT hardware sector, and smoothed operational difficulties for a major U.S. internet-based entertainment company. Paul is recognized within the U.S. business community as a thought leader on IT and telecom policy issues faced by foreign companies operating in China. Mr. Taylor is a fluent Mandarin Chinese speaker. He received his undergraduate degree from Western State College of Colorado and his MBA from the University of Colorado at Denver.

Patricia M. Kim is a fellow at the Brookings Institution. A leading expert on Chinese foreign policy, U.S.-China relations, and East Asian security and politics, Dr. Kim co-leads Brookings’ Global China Project. Before joining Brookings, Dr. Kim was a senior China specialist at the U.S. Institute of Peace. She has held fellowships at the Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and the Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program. Dr. Kim’s research and commentary have been featured in Foreign Affairs, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and other major outlets. She is a frequent advisor to U.S. policymakers and has testified before the House Intelligence Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade. She holds a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University and a B.A. with highest distinction in Political Science and Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley

Refugees + Immigrants United (RIU), a non-profit organization, and Sắp Sửa Restaurant invite you to a special event honoring the 50th anniversary of the fall of Sài Gòn and the Việtnamese refugees who fled and lost their lives due to the Việt Nam War. This day of remembrance, marking April 30, 1975, commemorates the journey of over 3 million forcibly displaced Việtnamese.

RIU, a Colorado-based non-profit that is refugee-led and refugee-founded, is entirely powered by refugees and immigrants with a mission to connect, educate, and celebrate the direct and diverse experiences of our refugee and immigrant communities. Through events like this, RIU preserves cultural heritage and fosters public understanding.

The purpose of the Cox Family Process speaker series is to invite a scholar known for a particular work and have them share the origin of the project, its reception, and its afterlife. Digital Humanities and the Intellectual History of al-Andalus
A talk by
Covadonga Baratech
(Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and the Middle East (ILC - CSIC))

What was the life expectancy of Andalusi scholars? What were the ten most common activities Andalusi scholars were involved in? In which century do we have the largest number of scholarly families? Where were they located? To which places did Andalusi scholars travel the most? A couple of decades ago, answering these questions would have taken weeks, even months to answer. However, thanks to databases like Prosopografía de Ulemas de al-Andalus (PUA) and programming languages like R, they are just a couple of lines of code away.
For this talk Covadonga Baratech provides an introduction to Prosopografía de Ulemas de al-Andalus, the main database for scholars of Muslim Iberia.She will discuss its strengths as well as some areas for improvement and share some of the results obtained when combined with a programming language such as R. The goal is to encourage people to explore the possibilities of these tools and apply new methodologies in their research.
She also invites people to think about data in new ways. How representative is the data we work with? Does it apply to most of the population? For example, analyzing PUA’s data we discover that the life expectancy of Andalusi scholars was 70,93 lunar years. However, we only know the life span of 1998 people or 17% of the dataset. Can we apply these findings to the rest of the scholars in the database? And what about the non-scholars of al-Andalus? What strategies can we use to make this data more fiable?
This talk will be of interest to scholars of Middle East and Islamic Studies, medievalists, historians of all places and periods, and any Humanities and Social Sciences Scholars interested in working with digital databases.

Covadonga Baratech is a PhD student at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean (CSIC). She is a member of the research project directed by M. Penelas and M. Fierro dealing with the migration of Andalusi and Maghribi scholars to other regions of the Islamic world (8th-15th centuries) and their intellectual and religious impact (PID2020-116680GB-I00). Her research focuses on the times of Saladin and the Ayyubids (1171-1260). She aims to study the intellectual exchanges between the Andalusi and Maghribi scholars and their Mashriqi colleagues. In particular, she intends to comprehend the spread of knowledge produced in the Maghrib into de Mashriq. Her main work areas are intellectual history, manuscript tradition and digital humanities.
